“Design and Technology should be the subject where mathematical brainboxes and science whizzkids turn their bright ideas into useful products.”
Intent
Our intent for Design and Technology education is that children are able to use creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real-world problems for an intended user through the opportunity to:
- Design
- Make/Cook
- Evaluate
Implementation
Our design and technology curriculum maximises pupils’ enjoyment by meeting their needs and interests through creative and motivating projects within a range of contexts. The three big ideas are developed through:
- Cross-curricular planning that is based on the best practice model of the ‘Projects on a Page’ scheme of work by the D&T Association.
- Projects (units of work) that are based on the six essentials of good practice in D&T:
– User: Having a clear idea of who they are designing and making products for.
– Purpose: Knowing what the products they design and make are for.
– Functionality: Designing and making products that function in some way to be successful.
– Design Decisions: Making informed decisions about materials, components and techniques
– Innovation: Being given scope to be original with their thinking.
– Authenticity: Designing and making products that are believable, real and meaningful. - Projects (units of work) that address a particular aspect of D&T including: mechanisms, structures, food and textiles, as well as mechanical systems and electrical systems in KS2.
- The completion of one project (unit of work) per term; taking a minimum of 6 hours and delivered through weekly lessons and/or half/whole day blocks.
- The completion of a sketch book to record design and evaluative activities, as well as photographs of practical work (e.g. prototypes or products)
- A range of tools and equipment (including ICT) that enable all year groups to design and make/cook products.
- Consumable resources that can be ordered to support each project.
Impact
Children leave Sproughton C of E Primary School, securely at age expectation. This is evidenced through the three design and technology big ideas:
- Design: I am a technologist because I draw upon my own experiences and my knowledge of existing products/dishes, materials and processes to formulate designs that meet a purpose and a user’s design criteria.
- Make/Cook: I am a technologist because I can select and use a range of tools, equipment, materials and components to make prototypes and products/dishes safely and/or hygienically.
- Evaluate: I am a technologist because I use design criteria to evaluate my own or existing products/dishes and suggest improvements.
Learning and teaching in Design & Technology is monitored regularly
by the subject leader for learning: Mrs Hannah Sibson.
