“Don’t dream of winning, train for it.”
Intent
Our intent for Physical Education (P.E.) is to facilitate flexible, innovative and engaging PE lessons to totally transform young people’s lives. Children are inspired to lead active, healthy lives by developing the three big ideas:
- Anatomy
- Participation
- Performance
Implementation
We use mastery-based learning approaches to ensure that all pupils have mastered key concepts before moving on to the next topic. This is contrast to traditional teaching methods in which pupils may be left behind.
(Education Endowment Fund, 2021). We facilitate deeper learning and mastery of the fundamental skills needed to be able to be successful within any physical activity. Our physical education curriculum progressively builds children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of anatomy, participation and performance by:
- Using Beyond the Physical as a springboard for learning
- Carefully sequenced topics so that they gradually build on foundational knowledge
- Additional support for pupils that struggle to master topic areas
- Learning is revisited at regular intervals
- Learning is informed by the principles of physical literacy and promotes a life-long love of movement for our children
- Learning with specialist sporting coaches (Level 5 Certificate in Primary School PE Specialism)
- Developing a variety of skills, sports, games and disciplines both indoors and outdoors
- Access to full sporting resources
- Developing pupil’s key vocabulary
- Joining extra-curricular sporting clubs
- Enjoying Forest School provision
- Participating in competitions both in school and inter-school
- Experiencing authentic and enriching connections to the wider curriculum inc. six ‘C’s
- Benefitting from belonging to the Westbourne School Games partnership group
Impact
Children leave Sproughton CofE Primary School, secure in their knowledge, skills and understanding of the three big ideas:
- Anatomy– I am an athlete because I know the importance of the effect of physical activity on my body and how to prepare safely for an activity.
- Participation– I am an athlete because I can participate in a broad range of sports and activities; competitively, individually and collaboratively
- Performance– I am an athlete because I develop fundamental movement skills to extend my agility, balance and co-ordination and have an understanding of how to evaluate and recognise my own successes.
Learning and teaching in Physical Education is monitored regularly
by the subject leader for learning: Mrs Jane Stalham.
